One of the most anticipated summer events in Lake Norman returns on Saturday, July 18, as Big Day at the Lake celebrates its 22nd year of creating unforgettable experiences for children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Carolinas mentoring program.
Each year, the event brings together local boating families, volunteers, sponsors, and mentors for a day centered on friendship, community, and giving back. For many of the children, known as “Littles,” it’s their very first opportunity to enjoy boating, swimming, or fishing on Lake Norman. Volunteer “Boat Hosts” welcome each Big and Little aboard for a morning of fun on the water, creating memories that last long after the day ends. This year, nearly 100 Littles and their mentors will participate.
Following the morning on the lake, everyone gathers for a community picnic attended by approximately 350 people, including boat hosts, Bigs, Littles, volunteers, and sponsors. The celebration features traditional picnic favorites, games, music, and a water slide, making it one of the most heartwarming community events of the summer.
Since launching in 2004, Big Day at the Lake has become a cherished Lake Norman tradition while raising more than $2 million for Big Brothers Big Sisters. This year’s fundraising efforts have already surpassed $100,000, helping support the organization’s mission of providing one-on-one mentoring relationships that offer friendship, guidance, educational support, and opportunities for children to expand their experiences.
The event’s continued success is made possible by the generosity of the Lake Norman community. Dozens of sponsors contribute financial and in-kind support, while more than 75 volunteers from local businesses and organizations dedicate their time throughout the year to help organize fundraising efforts and ensure everything runs smoothly on event day.
According to Donna Dunlap, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Carolinas, Big Day at the Lake is often the highlight of the year for many Bigs and Littles. It’s a chance to set aside everyday challenges, enjoy a fun-filled day together, and strengthen the meaningful relationships that mentoring creates.
As another summer unfolds around Lake Norman, Big Day at the Lake continues to demonstrate the power of community, showing how a single day of generosity can make a lifelong impact on a child.
