The Carolina Classic Fair has named Cary Hester fair director following the retirement of former director Cheryle Hartley. She began working for the City of Winston-Salem’s Department of Transportation in 1997 and was promoted to the fairgrounds in 2006. Hester was later promoted to assistant fair director of the Carolina Classic Fair in 2019.
As assistant fair director, Hester helped oversee one of North Carolina’s largest annual events, welcoming more than 250,000 guests each year while coordinating the complex operations of entertainment, concessions, vendors, ticketing, staff, and daily fair activities. Her responsibilities have included vendor oversight and compliance, financial settlements, operational planning, and supporting the continued growth and success of the Carolina Classic Fair.
Throughout her career, Hester has focused on strengthening the fair through innovation, accountability, and strategic planning. She has led efforts to improve vendor sales reporting through the implementation of point-of-sale policies and enhanced auditing procedures, while also supporting year-round fairgrounds operations through financial oversight and data-driven decision-making.
“Cary has built her career around creating exceptional fair experiences through strong leadership, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to her community,” said Robert Mulhearn, public assembly facilities and venue manager for the City of Winston-Salem. “Her commitment to continuous improvement and finding solutions to challenges has helped enhance the Fair’s operations and prepare us for a bright future.”
Hester also is actively engaged in the fair industry through organizations such as the International Association of Fairs and Expositions and the National Independent Concessionaires Association. Through these relationships, she continues to learn from industry professionals across the country, stays current on emerging trends and best practices, strengthens the Carolina Classic Fair’s reputation within the fair industry, and creates new opportunities for partnerships and growth.
She received Certified Fair Executive designation in spring 2025. In addition, Hester also holds an International Crowd Management certification and multiple FEMA certifications focused on emergency and disaster preparedness, reflecting her dedication to creating a safe and successful experience for guests, staff, and partners.
“Growing up in Winston-Salem, I attended the Carolina Classic Fair as a child and developed a lifelong love for fairs and the memories, traditions, and connections they create,” Hester said. “I have a personal passion and commitment to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities to experience the magic of the fair that I’ve enjoyed.
“As Fair Director, I look forward to building on the Carolina Classic Fair’s proud tradition while strengthening community connections, supporting agriculture and youth programs, and ensuring the Fair remains a beloved destination where families and friends can create memories for generations to come,” she added.
