Looking for a freelance journalism opportunity in the Lake Norman area? WSIC News is expanding its local news coverage and seeking Freelance Community News Reporters to cover communities across Lake Norman.
Openings are available for reporters dedicated to Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Mooresville, Troutman and Statesville. The goal is to provide consistent, community-focused reporting on the decisions, developments and local news that affect residents in their everyday lives.
Each freelance reporter will primarily focus on an assigned community. Coverage will include town board, city council, commissioner and other local government meetings, as well as school board meetings and education issues affecting local families.
Reporters will also follow important Lake Norman news involving growth and development, transportation, public safety and other community issues. Responsibilities include identifying newsworthy local stories, interviewing elected officials, community leaders and residents, and writing clear, accurate and timely articles for the WSIC News website. Reporters may also create social media content and capture photos or short-form video related to their coverage.
Applicants do not need years of professional newsroom experience. WSIC News is looking for strong writers and communicators who know their communities, are comfortable asking questions and can report fairly and objectively. Candidates should also be dependable, able to work independently and available to attend evening public meetings when needed.
College students, recent graduates, aspiring journalists, experienced reporters and strong local writers are encouraged to apply. Previous journalism, reporting, communications or media experience is a plus.
These are freelance positions with compensation provided per approved and published post. Workload will vary depending on local meetings, assignments and developing news.
