What’s on the Ballot for Lake Norman: Why This Vote Hits Close to Home

The Road Ahead: Why This Local Decision Matters More Than You Think

If you’ve been meaning to get more involved locally, now’s the time—early voting is open now, and this year’s ballot could shape the future of how we move, live, and grow here in Lake Norman.

At the heart of the conversation? A proposed 1% sales tax increase for Mecklenburg County. If approved, it would raise the current rate from 7.25% to 8.25%, generating billions over the next three decades to fund road improvements, public transit, and local infrastructure projects—including long-awaited fixes and expansions across Cornelius, Huntersville, and Davidson.

Supporters say this new funding stream is essential to keep up with our region’s rapid growth, citing clogged roads, delayed projects, and the need for safer, smarter connectivity. They point to a projected $100+ million in new road funding for North Mecklenburg in the first five years, with major boosts for projects like the West Catawba Avenue widening and Catawba Avenue/US 21 intersection upgrades.

Opponents, however, argue that the tax would hit lower- and middle-income families the hardest, calling it regressive and questioning whether the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) can manage the influx responsibly given past challenges. Others remain skeptical about big-ticket items like the proposed Red Line commuter rail, which promises to connect North Mecklenburg towns to Uptown Charlotte and the airport.

So, why does it matter? Because the outcome of this local decision affects all of us—from how long it takes to get to work, to how easily we can explore and enjoy our community.

No matter where you stand, the message is simple: your voice matters. Show up, weigh in, and help shape the next chapter of Lake Norman.
