Sarcoma Sucks 5k took the fight to sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer with no cure, by raising $27,000 in their second annual event March 21 in Concord, NC.
Sarcoma Sucks 5k benefits the Charlotte-based Move For Jenn Foundation (MFJ), and all proceeds will go to fund clinical sarcoma research trials at Levine Cancer Center in Charlotte. Sarcoma research is underfunded and these kinds of trials are desperately needed to create more effective treatments.
The Sarcoma Sucks 5k was started in honor of Jenny Harman, a Concord resident and mother of two who passed away three years ago after a courageous battle with this rare cancer. The race also honors Jenny’s uncle, Jeff Grose, and grandmother, Faye Grose, who passed away after fighting subtypes of sarcoma.
Sarcoma is an aggressive and often overlooked cancer, forming tumors in bones or soft tissues such as muscles, fat, and nerves. Approximately 17,000 people are diagnosed annually, with sarcoma accounting for 1% of adult cancers and 15% to 20% of childhood cancers.
MFJ is a 501c3 non-profit named after founder Jenn Andrews, who faced an amputation after discovering a sarcoma on her foot during a pedicure.
Dusty Harman, Jenny’s widowed husband and race founder, said: Being able to raise $27,000 to fund create better sarcoma treatments is such a blessing.
“We just don’t know enough about how sarcoma will respond to treatment. Jenny had to try multiple therapies, all with different side effects – and none finding the right combination to stop her cancer. Research like this is badly needed to create breakthroughs and improve the quality of care for patients.”
Pablo Sosa, Executive Director of MFJ, said, “The Move For Jenn Foundation was built on the belief that community has the power to change outcomes. We are proud to collaborate with the Sarcoma Sucks 5K to help raise funds for a sarcoma-specific research project at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Center.
“Together, we’re investing in research that has the potential to directly impact the lives of children and families fighting this rare cancer.”
Organizers say the momentum from this year’s race is already building excitement for the future. The third annual Sarcoma Sucks 5K is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, 2027.
