16th Annual Rainbow Kidz Run Returns to Lake Norman Area This May

A meaningful community tradition is returning to the Lake Norman area this spring. The 16th Annual Timmy Belcher Memorial Rainbow Kidz Run will take place on Saturday, May 2 in downtown Statesville, bringing together runners, families, and supporters for a cause that continues to impact local lives.

Held along Broad Street in the heart of downtown, the event features a 5K, 10K, and a free kids fun run, making it accessible for participants of all ages and experience levels. For those who prefer flexibility, a virtual participation option is also available. The race begins and ends near Broad Street United Methodist Church at 315 W. Broad Street, creating a central gathering point for the day’s activities.

Beyond the race itself, the event supports the Rainbow Kidz program through Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County. For more than 20 years, Rainbow Kidz has provided no-cost grief and bereavement support to children and families across the Lake Norman region. Today, the program reaches more than 700 children annually, offering school-based grief groups, one-on-one counseling in Statesville and Mooresville, summer grief education programs, and Camp Rainbow, a weeklong experience designed to help children process loss in a supportive environment.

The run also honors the memory of Timmy Belcher, whose vision inspired the original event. After battling cancer, Timmy’s story and the support his family received from the community became the foundation for what has grown into a lasting local tradition. Each year, participants come together not only to raise funds, but to remember, reflect, and support families navigating grief.

Race day activities begin early, with packet pickup and same-day registration available from 7:00 to 8:15 a.m., followed by the 5K and 10K starting at 8:30 a.m. The fun run kicks off at 10:30 a.m., making it a full morning of community connection and movement in downtown Statesville.

Those interested in participating, volunteering, or learning more can visit the official event page to register and find full details. Whether you run, walk, or simply show up to support, this Lake Norman event is a meaningful way to give back to local families while being part of a strong and supportive community.
